Attribute Formatting Standards

Product dimensions and measurements need to follow specific formatting rules in Business Central. These rules ensure consistent, readable dimensions across the website and prevent auto-rejections.

What you'll learn: Exact formatting standards for dimension attributes, including spacing, symbols, and label ordering.

Time required: 5 minutes to read (reference as needed)

What you need:

  • Product dimensions to enter

  • Access to item attributes in Business Central

Why Formatting Matters

The backend system validates attribute formatting before publishing to the website. Incorrect formats trigger auto-rejection emails and prevent products from syncing.

These rules enforce:

  • Consistent dimension formatting

  • Readable product specifications

  • Proper ordering of dimension labels

  • Standardized spacing and symbols

Follow these rules exactly to avoid rejections and ensure your products sync correctly.

Dimension Label Ordering

Standard 3-Dimension Format (L × W × H)

When dimensions contain three measurements, always use this order:

  • Length × Width × Height

Correct examples:

  • 10" L x 10" W x 20" H

  • 15" L x 8" W x 12" H

  • 20" L x 20" W x 30" H

Incorrect examples:

  • 10"L x 20"H x 10"W (wrong order, no spacing)

  • 10"Lx20"Hx10"W (wrong order, no spacing)

  • 20" H x 10" L x 10" W (wrong order)

The rule: Always L, then W, then H with proper spacing.

Width × Height × Extension Format

For products with width, height, and extension measurements:

  • Width × Height × Extension

Correct examples:

  • 10" W x 10" H x 20" Ext.

  • 15" W x 12" H x 25" Ext.

Incorrect examples:

  • 10"Wx20"ext.x10"H (no spacing, wrong capitalization)

  • 10"W x 20"ext x 10"H (no spacing after quote, wrong case on "ext")

  • 20" Ext. x 10" W x 10" H (wrong order)

The rule: W, then H, then Ext. (with period) - all properly spaced.

Diameter × Height Format (2 Dimensions Only)

When only two dimensions are present and labeled as D and H:

  • Always Height first, then Diameter

Correct examples:

  • 10" H x 5" D

  • 15" H x 8" D

  • 20" H x 10" D

Incorrect examples:

  • 5" D x 10" H (wrong order)

  • 5" D x 10" D (wrong order, both labeled D)

  • 5"D x 10"D (wrong order, no spacing)

  • 5"Dx10"D (wrong order, no spacing)

The rule: H always comes before D.

Supported Dimension Labels

Only these labels are recognized and valid:

H → Height L → Length W → Width D → Diameter Ext. → Extension (note the period)

Use these labels exactly:

  • Uppercase letters (H, L, W, D)

  • Extension must be abbreviated as "Ext." with a period

  • No other labels are supported

Spacing & Symbol Formatting Rules

Rule 1: Space After Double Quotes

Add a space after every double quote (") if it is immediately followed by a non-space character.

Correct examples:

  • 10" H (space after the quote, before H)

  • 15" L (space after the quote, before L)

Incorrect examples:

  • 10"H (no space after quote)

  • 15"L (no space after quote)

Rule 2: Space Before and After "x" Separator

Ensure there is a space before and after the lowercase "x" when used as a dimension separator.

Correct examples:

  • 10 x 20 x 30 (spaces on both sides of each x)

  • 10" L x 20" W x 30" H (spaces around each x)

Incorrect examples:

  • 10x20x30 (no spaces)

  • 10 x20 x30 (missing space before x)

  • 10x 20x 30 (missing space after x)

Rule 3: Space Before and After "+" Symbol

Ensure there is a space before and after the + symbol when used.

Correct examples:

  • 10 + 5 (spaces on both sides)

  • 15 + 10 (spaces on both sides)

Incorrect examples:

  • 10+5 (no spaces)

  • 10 +5 (missing space before +)

  • 10+ 5 (missing space after +)

Auto-Rejection Notifications

When dimension formatting fails to meet these requirements, you'll receive an email notification.

The email tells you:

  • Which product was rejected

  • What attribute failed validation

  • Why it failed (formatting issue)

What to do:

  1. Read the rejection email for specifics

  2. Open the item card in Business Central

  3. Navigate to attributes

  4. Fix the formatting issue following these rules

  5. Save and close

  6. Run the flow (if modifying existing product) or just save (if new product)

Important: Incorrect formats are not permitted to be published to the website. You must fix them.

Common Formatting Mistakes

Mistake 1: No spacing after quotes

  • 10"L x 5"W x 20"H

  • 10" L x 5" W x 20" H

Mistake 2: No spacing around x

  • 10" Lx5" Wx20" H

  • 10" L x 5" W x 20" H

Mistake 3: Wrong dimension order

  • 20" H x 10" L x 5" W

  • 10" L x 5" W x 20" H

Mistake 4: Diameter before height

  • 5" D x 10" H

  • 10" H x 5" D

Mistake 5: Lowercase labels

  • 10" l x 5" w x 20" h

  • 10" L x 5" W x 20" H

Mistake 6: Extension without period

  • 10" W x 10" H x 20" Ext

  • 10" W x 10" H x 20" Ext.

Mistake 7: No spacing with + symbol

  • 10+5

  • 10 + 5

Formatting Template

Use this template for 3 dimensions:

Example: 12" L x 8" W x 20" H

Use this template for W/H/Ext:

Example: 10" W x 10" H x 15" Ext.

Use this template for H/D:

Example: 15" H x 8" D

Testing Your Format

Before saving, ask yourself:

  1. Did I put dimensions in the right order?

  2. Is there a space after each quote mark?

  3. Is there a space before and after each x?

  4. Are all my labels uppercase?

  5. If I used Extension, does it have a period?

  6. If I used +, does it have spaces around it?

If you can answer yes to all: Your format is correct.

If any are no: Fix the issue before saving.
